New Sub Arc Automatic Welding System Installed
This system was custom designed, installed in-house and is capable of both external and internal circumferential or longitudinal welding of cylinders for vessel shells. The system has been extremely efficient, resulting in increased productivity on the shop floor. The welding quality is excellent and the system has been generating superior repeatability in the welds. Our quality assurance staff and our customers are excited about the improvements derived from this new welding system. We are now bidding on larger projects, knowing the efficiency of this system will be there to handle the load.

I. Matheson & Company ships two ASME certified Desalter pressure vessels to Russia
I. Matheson, with a world wide reputation for quality products, reports that they recently shipped two horizontal ASME certified Desalter pressure vessels, complete with process piping to the Khabarovsk Refinery on the far east coast of Russia, very near the border of China.
A company spokesperson stated "the main purpose of the vessels is to reduce the salt content in the crude oil by using electrostatic charges. By design, these vessels will be able to handle a maximum wet crude flow rate of 54,711 BPD."

Local businessman finds trade missions beneficial
By Steve Goodwin steve@pictouadvocate.com
Jim MacDougall says he appreciates how trade missions through Nova Scotia Business Inc. have helped him find work for his New Glasgow company.
“It has been a success story,” says MacDougall, referring to work being done at I. Matheson and Company (1974) Ltd. in New Glasgow since the company began trade missions to Alberta.
Since then, Matheson’s has secured contracts with AMR Process Inc. to build desalters, and other equipment used in oil processing, for markets around the world.
“We’ve worked well together,” MacDougall says. “It’s been very good.”
Located in New Glasgow’s north end, Matheson’s has produced fabricated metal products for more than 150 years, but prides itself in operating a state-of-the-art facility.
The local company has been known more for building boilers and pressure vessels.
Since forming its relationship with AMR Process, Matheson’s has sent oil processing equipment to firms in Iraq, Nigeria, Tunisia and Italy, while officials from those firms have visited the company’s plant in New Glasgow.
“We have two pieces (for oil processing) in the shop right now,” MacDougall says. “They’re quite large and complex and we’re building them here.
"It’s very exciting when we have people from half-way around the world visiting us. It’s kind of neat.”
Coincidently, NSBI president Stephen Lund was a scheduled guest speaker today (Sept. 9) as the Pictou County Chamber of Commerce resumed its Business Breakfast series at the Holiday Inn Express in Stellarton.
Lund was to use the visit to share his perspective on the global economy and how the province can better position itself to take advantage of it in the future.
In recent years, NSBI has been focused on strengthening Nova Scotia’s economy and has attracted a number of world-leading companies to the province.
However, the agency continues to help Matheson’s, and other local, home-grown businesses, reach new markets and become stronger global competitors.
“It’s just so exciting,” said Lynn Coffin, NSBI’s business advisory services account executive in New Glasgow. “We facilitated the process, but Matheson’s went out there and negotiated sales and AMR was eager to deal with this kind of company.
"That’s what these trade missions are all about, to develop these relationships so that local companies can export their products to other provinces and other countries.”
To bolster the relationship with Matheson’s, AMR Process invited MacDougall to attend a banquet in Alberta in March, when it received the Alberta Export Award in the professional and services category.
AMR Process has also been short-listed for a Canadian exporter award.
